Warn Me Before You Make Me Download a PDF!
|
You know what I really hate? I really hate it when someone puts a link up on their site, a link to more information about something, or a page about something in which you are interested, and it turns out that it’s not a link to another page or another site at all, it’s a link to a !@#$%^&*! PDF file, which downloads to your drive with no warning!
HOW RUDE!
Now sure, it’s sometimes easier to offer up information in PDF format. Sometimes you don’t want people to be able to monkey with your text (not that it’s difficult to break a PDF and monkey with it anyways). Or sometimes the info is in a word processor file and you’re too lazy to turn it into an HTML page, so you just PDF it (don’t you just hate it when people verb a noun, too?) and put it up on your web site.
But it’s just plain RUDE to present a download link without telling people that it’s a download link!
Would it be so hard to say “This is a link to a PDF. It will download to your computer.”???
Morons.

I suppose they should also put a warning on all HTML links that say “This is an HTML link. The page will download and stored on your computer, along with all the embedded graphics.” Lame.

Actually, considering this:
http://www.aunty-spam.com/downloading-porn-is-the-same-as-making-porn
and this: http://www.aunty-spam.com/ever-visit-a-porn-site-even-accidentally
…that’s not such a bad idea!

Simple solution. Webpage writers should always include a “(PDF)” if that link goes to a PDF.
