Suing the U.S. Government is “An Act of Faith in America”

Two Muslim brothers from Brooklyn, Yasser and Hany Ibrahim, who were detained immediately following 9/11, then deported to Egypt on immigration violations and never charged with anything related to terrorism, are back in the states this week, in 24-hour Federal Marshall custody. Why? Yasser and Hany Ibrahim are here to give evidence in their lawsuit against the U.S. government.

According to the lawsuit, Hany and Yasser Ibrahim, along with several other detainees, were detained, abused, and denied due process solely on the basis of their religion and national origin, which ordinarily would violate the constitutional prohibition against, well, denial of due process based on religion or national origin.

The government, of course, not only admits no wrongdoing, but says that the September 11th attacks created “special factors” which “outweigh the plaintiffs’ right to sue for any damages for any constitutional violations.”

In other words, as we all know, the government is bound by the constitution to protect your right to due process, except for when it decides that it isn’t.

But, say Hany and Yasser Ibrahim, their suing the U.S. government is an “act of faith in America.”

According to Yasser Ibrahim, “It’s from the same system that did us injustice before. But I have faith in this system. I know what happened before was a mistake.”

Wow. Do they really believe that they are going to get any justice?

What the heck have they been smoking, while cooling their heels in Egypt since 9/11? Whatever it was, their lawyers have obviously been blowing some of that smoke up their asses.

It was wrong for them to be denied entry just on the basis of their religion and country
of origin, especially since Egypt is supposedly a US ally. But they DID attempt to enter
the country right after 9/11, when knee-jerk reactions were the rule of the day. And with
the change in this country’s attitude towards Middle Easterners (who are NOT all Muslim
BTW), it’s not likely that things will turn out much different this time around.

It’s good that they have faith in the system, but apparently they’re not aware of how much
    the system has changed.

Too many of us stand back and and allow these things to continue.I fought the Government for a
different reason and won.I applaud their courage.I will never allow the misguided to take our
freedoms away.It is up to all of us to insure the system works.I fought, for my country, to protect
these freedoms. So have all those who came before and after me,from the founding of our country to the
present day.To do nothing is the greatest Evil.

    Fuck ‘em.

  4. phord Says:

Good for them! If they don’t use the system to fight the system, if we all simply give up and say “it won’t work”, then we’ve truly and finally destroyed it.

If you hate the government we have now, wait until you see the one we have in 15 years!

  5. ReFUG Says:

well, unless the lawyers are misleading the plaintiffs, they no doubt do not expect to receive `justice’. yet the statement makes sense either way, if you see is as a means of politely reminding that, if the letter of the law is upheld they were `right’ to trust in the system to correct the mistakes of a part, or is, as argued by phord, a sure `lose’ if they don’t bother to try.
