Here I am, at work, about to euthanize a dog because his owner moved and simply does not want to take him. Offered to find the dog a home for her, no, she wants his body back. Same old story as it has been for years. Look, we kill enough, OK? We have the luxury of euthanizing those that are sick and in pain - doesn’t make it easy, but we can swallow that. I am tired of euthanizing animals just because you are too lazy to take care of them. “He’s just too hyper”, “She just got so big”, “Our new place is too small for her” - DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TAKE A LIFE INTO YOUR HANDS. Because quite frankly, if it were up to me, when you come in wanting us to kill your inconvenience - I’d make you do it yourself! Oh, and by the way, in light of kitten season coming up, I am going to keep baseball bat behind the front counter for each and every ignorant individual, with an IQ of 8, that comes through my front door with a litter of kittens that their cat had. This will be to bash them over the head when they give me the, “We don’t know how she got out, but she did and got pregnant - now we just don’t know what to do with the kittens.” Or my favorite, “We wanted our children to see the miracle of birth just once”. How about this - let’s also let them witness the miracle of death - as the kittens are euthanized because there are no homes to put them in. And don’t give me the, “It’s OK, we found homes for them all ourselves” - because you just took up prospective homes for kittens that were ALREADY BORN BEFORE YOU DECIDED TO TAKE IT UPON YOURSELF TO OVERPOPULATE US WITH MORE! Just remember, for every kitten and puppy that is born, another kitten and puppy is killed. So congratulations to all of you death mongers out there that insist on letting your animals breed - you may think you aren’t part of the problem - but you are the problem.

Kudos for this rant. Having grown up in a famiy where both parents were animal control officers, I personally have experienced the heartbreak these people have to experience every time they have to euthanize an animal — and I know that there are hundreds of thousands of these unwanted animals put to sleep every year in the U.S. because people are too ignorant and/or too lazy to have their pets spayed or neutered.

But you forgot to mention the idiots who insist that their dog or cat have at least one litter before being spayed, because they believe that the pet “won’t be right” if it doesn’t procreate at least once….

  2. PBandJ Says:

Ah, yes, another favorite of mine - how could I forget? And just a little statistical fact for those of you that think you aren’t contributing because you are breeding a purebreed - 20% of all animals entering the shelter are pure breed. Congrats are your contribution!

  3. Patrick Says:

I would rather see them euthanized than left to run the streets. Shame on you for
encouraging that type of behavior just because you do not want to do your job!

  4. PBandJ Says:

I am not encouraging any type of behavior, and I agree, I would rather see them euthanized than running the streets - my point was (and clearly you missed it completely) simply that they should not have been put in that situation in the first place, because if they hadn’t, it wouldn’t be a problem. And yes, I do not want to have to do the job that I do - the shelter situation is one that any of us would be happy to see not needed any more. I can only day dream of the point in time that someone says, “You don’t need to do your job anymore”. That would be absolutely fantastic! If you think it is as simple as your argument above, then shame on you for being as ignorant as the people that I was ranting about in the first place. Perhaps you should be sure that you know what you are talking about before you debate - it only makes you look dumb. I am sorry that you are dumb.

  5. PBandJ Says:

P.S., if you would like to tell me further how you feel, and actually have supporting facts to back up your ludicrous responce - please - bring it on.

  6. Donna Says:

In responce to PBandJ, YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!
The point is not whether she enjoys her job or whether unwanted animals should be
killed, but that people should be more RESPONSIBLE when taking in pets and be aware that
this is a long term commitment. A pet is the same as a child, you are responsible for
their well being FOR THIER ENTIRE NATURAL LIFE. Be sure you can handle the commitment
and for christs sake get your pet nuetered/spayed as to avoid pet over population.
Back at you, got anything else stupid to say, BRING IT ON!!!

  7. PBandJ Says:

Thank you, Donna - as in my original post - its about what was done, or not done, in the first place, that could have prevented the animals that are unwanted. Please forgive me if I have little sympathy for those that have taken on these lives, and are now handing them over like a piece of unwanted furniture. Perhaps they haven’t “let them run on the streets”, but they are the reason the animal was being euthanized in the first place - that is what pisses me off.

  8. Yunbu Says:

I, for one think that with said baseball bat, just say to your customer who brings in the litter, “alright, put them kittens up on this there table and i’ll get ta crackin.”

  9. Yunbu Says:

thats emphasis on SAY dont do it

  10. limsey Says:

The same people who preach being responsible with the lives of pets are the
first ones in line to murder their babies in the womb.

  11. Krantzstone Says:

Kudos. I personally am not a huge proponent of humans keeping pets at all, simply because a lot of pet owners are utterly useless. I mean, we have humans who can’t even take care of their own children, or themselves for that matter, yet somehow they think they can take care of a pet animal.

Much as I love dogs and would love to have a puppy, I know in my heart I am ill-equipped to handle that huge a responsibility (well, that and I’m allergic to a lot of animals, including dogs :P) so I haven’t gone out and gotten one.

I say we start euthanizing bad pet owners instead.

  12. PBandJ Says:

Krantzstone - you are wonderful!!!! I wish more people stopped and assessed their ability to keep a pet. I think it is great that you thought about being ill-equipped, before jumping into it. Kudos to you.

Limsey - that comment was ignorant, and a gross over-genralization. Not to mention, what I thinkm just a way to mention your own grudges with abortion. It was way off the subject. Make your own rant, as you clearly feel strongly about your issue. I guarantee if you rant it, they will come with the opinions. Or perhaps you are too scared to turn your feelings into a rant, and so are passive-aggresivley embedding it into another rant?

  13. PBandJ Says:

Oh, and Yunbu - you are hilarious, and I won’t be able to help myself from thinking that everytime someone brings in their kittens, from now on. Hopefully I don’t get a grin across my face as they are doing it. Although, perhaps if it is an evil grin it will say volumes.

  14. Patrick Says:

Wow, love the name calling. So, a persons situation changes and can’t keep the pet,
and you’re against them letting the animals run loose, and you don’t want to do your
job… Hmmm, most areas that I know of don’t let you euthanize animals on their own
so that leaves - you. If you don’t like your job, stop whining and get another job.
However, the responsible thing to do if you can’t keep your pet - is to euthanize.
The pet stores and dog kennels are already overcrowded and in my area euthanization
is the only other legal choice.

  15. PBandJ Says:

Yes Patrick, you are right, euthanasia is the best option, and you are once again missing my oint (and for the record, “dumb” was not meant to call you a name, it was meant to point out your condition). My poing was, that irresponsibility should not have happened in the first place. You are right, once the damage is done, i.e. they already have the pet and can’t keep them, then it is better to bring them to the shelter, than letting them run loose. My point - and get ready, cause here it is again - THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN THE DOG IN THE FIRST PLACE IF THEY WERE NOT READY TO TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITY. read Krantzstones jpost above, if more people thought like this, as they should, the problem would not be so bad. And, by the way, I am not whining about my job, I am saying that it is tough, and no one likes to do it. I would rather know that I am doing it, because I care, rather than someone who doesn’t. You won’t fine a euthanasia tech that “likes” their job. So I guess you are saying that if I don’t “like” my job, I shouldn’t do it? I guess you feel that we should leave it to those that like to do it. Once again, I am sorry for your condition.

  16. PBandJ Says:

P.S. To everyone - I apologize for the typos, my screen cuts off most of the words, so I can not see what I am typing - don’t want you to think that I suffer from Patrick’s condition.

  17. Patrick Says:

You’re right - I fail to see your reasoning on why it is OK to whine about a job you chose.
You realize, apparently, that people’s lifes change after they take on responsiblities.
You realize that, other than euthanization, there are few responsible or legal
    alternatives to turn to.
My neighbor actually is a dog pound owner who euthanizes frequently because in this area
there are literally no alternatives. Like most adults, we have job duties that we don’t
like and realize that whining doesn’t make them go away. Life changes and so do the
abilities to handle old responsiblities. Really, you must be very young (or act that way). You should consider your current job as a little bit of life experience that you are learning from.

  18. PBandJ Says:

Firsts of all, I would like to know how your neighbor is a “dog pound owner”, as these are either government run, or private animal shelter - of which there is not an “owner”. Secondly, I am not whining about my job in the least, I am merely saying that what we have to do is unfortunate, and preventable. And, I am sorry, these lifestyle changes gain little sympathy from me - you don’t give up your kid because you had a lifestyle change. And yes, I would like the need for this to go away, and I don’t expect this to happen through “whining”, rather through education - something in which I am very involved. The purpose of a rant is to get it off your chest. After what euthanasia techs, and shelter workers, deal with on a daily basis, we have the right to let off steam and get it off of our chests once in awhile. I would like you to work in a shelter for just 2 weeks, and see how you feel (and I won’t believe you if you say you already have, because if you had, that point would have been brought up by now). Until you have done so, you are making judgements on something about which, you know nothing about. I would also like to know how you classify “whining” - whining is what you do when you don’t want to go flip burgers for minimum wage, when it comes to animals lives, though, it is not whining - it is being tired of cleaning up irresponsible owners messes. I take no pity on them - when you make a commitment to an animal, it is for life. They are not toys that you can play with, and then give up when it becomes an inconvenience. Perhaps you should stop whining about how you have no alternatives in these situations, and do something about it. It is easy to sit back and pass judgement when you are not involved - but, trust me, once you become involved and realize the severity of the problem, and the reality of it, your opinion will change. Period.

  19. DragonMom Says:

PBandJ, more power to ya. My husband worked in an animal shelter, cleaning the kennel and helping hold down animals to be euthanized, until he couldn’t take it anymore. As tough as he is, he’s still extremely sensitive and couldn’t bear to help kill the animals anymore. I agree, a lifestyle change is no excuse. Take the time to put an ad in the paper, or at least signs around the neighborhood, saying “free cat/dog/whatever to good home”. You’d be amazed the response you receive. And I truly do not understand the pet owners who claim to love their animals, but when they have to give them up, their first thought is to KILL said animal rather than make sure they’re happy with another family. Guess you only loved your pet as long as it was convenient, huh? And frankly, isn’t it cheaper to place an ad in the paper than to pay for euthanasia?

  20. PBandJ Says:

Thanks DragonMom - always so nice to have other enlightened people on here!

  21. Laura Says:

Patrick, I think what you are missing is that sure our situations change from time to time but if we are responsible people we choose options that will work out for everyone, even our pets. If you were going to move or take a new job that was more demanding you wouldn’t get rid of your wife and kids would you? When you take a pet it should be a final commitment and any plans, decisions,or choices you to make after that should be with considerations taken for that animal as well as yourself and your family.
