I was a member of Freecycle for a long time. I always was trying to post things to give away to people, and to find things to help out my needy neighbors.
The moderators, are nothing but jokes. They belittle everyone. If you make the smallest mistake while offering or asking for an item, you would get emailed at least 3 times to be told how idiotic you are, and how you will have to re-read the rules, be put on permanent moderation, all because I forgot to add in my town name?!
Thanks to years of frustration with the Westminster MD Freecycle group, I have given up, and started my own thing, to truly help people, with no crazy or stupid rules.
And I found out it is not just me - I have talked with at least 20 members of the local freecycle and they all dislike the moderators and their actions as well. Please tell me why adults need to be moderated like this?? We started calling them the Freecycle Nazis. No post for you!

You are right that the quality of a group depends on the standards set by the owner-mods. But just because you have tried one bad group, do not tarnish others with the same poor standards. Look around for other groups. In some parts of the world several groups cover the same area, for example I belong to over 15 groups and run one.
