I know that you must be stalling on actually getting my computer fixed, Mr. IT Guy. Is it because you like to see my face, glaring at you, three times a week? I notice how vehemently you defend Vista at the slightest insinuation that the "upgrade" to "Vista-piece-o-shita" has caused all of these problems (problems that were not there when I was on good ole' XP). Is this just your masked passion for me? How well do anti-spam laws work? One of my recent experiences might shed some light on how such laws actually play out in front of judges. The short version: Laws can help, but they need to be pretty airtight, to take into account the fact that judges might be very hostile to people bringing these cases, probably for three reasons: (1) The law requires you to make a quasi-legal argument, and many judges, after trudging through years in law school and decades as a lawyer, resent people walking in off the street and making legal arguments; (2) Many judges don't use e-mail (more...)

Just thinking that it would be nice to have a rule out there where, if someone starts kvetching, they would be required to either: a) Come up with a workable solution to the problem (emphasis on workable; fairy godmothers or The Hand Of JHVH or 'get a dictatorship of the proletariat' don't count unless they detail exactly how such a thing is to be accomplished); b) Admit that they don't have a workable solution to the problem; or c) Shut the fuck up. Just when you thought is was impossible to further butcher the English language, along comes another shortened, non-sensical 'word' used on message boards, chat rooms, and e-mail that may as well be in Sanskrit for all of its readability. Just what the hell is "l33t", exactly? High school and college students are turning in papers containing "w00t" and "ROFL". People are signing e-mail with "Laterz!". And in a case of utter stupidity, I received the following response to a job ad I had placed looking for, ironically, writers: "I wud like 2 rite 4 U! I rite good english and love (more...)

I don't solict or google pornography. However I was very pleased with Googles stance on not releasing their search records on porno. It is a freedom Google was defending and I couldn't have been more proud of them. Unfortunately that admiration turned to anger just a few days later. Google does not feel they have their market share in China. In order to "get into the game" they made a deal with the Chinese government. That deal was censorship. Other search engines had already complied with the Chinese censorship. Google once again was the hold out ... until now. I guess (more...)

You know what I really hate? I really hate it when someone puts a link up on their site, a link to more information about something, or a page about something in which you are interested, and it turns out that it's not a link to another page or another site at all, it's a link to a !@#$%^&*! PDF file, which downloads to your drive with no warning! HOW RUDE! Now sure, it's sometimes easier to offer up information in PDF format.
