This is why we should not make a practice of trapping and keeping wild animals. THEY ARE WILD. They are unpredictable, and they generally get pissed off when they are forced in these "habitats" that are completely counter-intuitive to the way that they are programed to live and survive. We can say that it is for "research", or for "education", but the truth of the matter is that it is for the almighty buck. I am writing to you about a disgusting book, 'The Pornographer of Vienna' by Lewis Crofts. Last weekend I was browsing in my local bookshop (Waterstones in Tunbridge Wells) and without warning in the fiction section came across said book, and was utterly shocked because it had a picture of a lady's private parts blatantly emblazoned on the spine. There was not even a sticker of warning or anything, and young children could easily have seen it. I do not think it is right that a book like that is freely displayed. I was absolutely *stunned* today to read this headline: "Teachers Stage Fake Gunman Attack on Sixth-Graders" It happened in Murfreesboro, Tennessee The gist of it, according to CNN, was this: Staff members of the school in Murfreesboro TN convinced nearly 70 children that there was a gunman on the loose, while they were out on a field trip. Not only did the teachers stage this mock attack, but they told the children that "it was not a drill," as, and I quote, "the children cried and hid under tables." I've had it with sales people. What is it about them that means that they can't leave me alone to make a decision? Clothing stores, bookstores, furniture stores... A polite "can I help you?" is great! Even a couple of "that looks great on you"-style comments are nice to get. But the constant pressure to buy is simply over the top - I end up leaving the store without purchasing and going somehwere else where the staff aren't so aggressive. As a field technician, I get to see examples of all types of people and their actions. Most of the time, I find people to be generally kindhearted, respectful, and friendly. I recently wrote the following to Nancy Grace reference a recent episode of her horrible show on CNN: I write to comment on the recent Nancy Grace Show (I believe it was May 29) about the young woman found strangled in her dorm. Greetings to all that have no concept of time in regards to late night jaunts to the local burger joint. Yup you guessed it, I work for a semi-fast food restaurant. There is one thing that just rubs me more raw than sandpaper on a sunburned crotch ever could. One thing that I have noticed when it comes to the ability to tell time accurately around a restaurant's closing time is IT DOESN'T EXIST. I have no real love for marketers and marketing copywriters generally, but honestly, have you ever read the drivel that gets affixed to wine or attached to artwork? Who writes this crap?? Did they get their writing degree, if they have one, by drawing 'Spunky' from a matchbook? Do they actually take themselves seriously?? Does anyone take them seriously? There has been a lot in the press today about how the doctors hired to oversee Michael Angelo Morales' execution, to make sure that he didn't suffer crushing agony during his lethal injection, refused to carry out their task, saying that it was unethical for them, and went against the Hippocratic oath. They could have done it, technically and medically speaking, but it would be wrong, they said. Why is it that it's not acceptable to make fun of overweight people, but it's just a-okay to comment on a thin person's weight? Have you noticed lately the trend for advocacy groups to employ those for whom they advocate? Isn't that nice of them? For example, I hear on the radio all the time about "homeless advocates". What? You mean, they aren't homeless? You mean that they are advocates for the homeless? But that's not what they said. They said that they are "homeless advocates". I don't know if this is a rant, but here it comes: It's been my experience that the liberals I know are, for the most part, very responsible people. What I don't understand is why these folks don't require that same personal responsibility from the "downtrodden." It seems they want the government to do everything for those less fortunate than themselves. This morning, driving down that highway to hell, 101, in Silicon Valley, I had one of those moments where it made sense to me why it's not legal for new immigrants to own handguns. Merging onto the freeway, I accelerated, indicated, checked over my shoulder and started pulling into a welcoming space. Here's a question. Why is it that every time someone invokes Hitler's name (Godwin's law, we in the geek Internet circles call it), everyone goes "OoooOOoooOooh! You can't say that!" But it's perfectly ok to invoke the Jonestown tragedy, in all sorts of situations, and nobody lifts an eyebrow?? My gawd. Just when you thought is was impossible to further butcher the English language, along comes another shortened, non-sensical 'word' used on message boards, chat rooms, and e-mail that may as well be in Sanskrit for all of its readability. Just what the hell is "l33t", exactly? High school and college students are turning in papers containing "w00t" and "ROFL". People are signing e-mail with "Laterz!". Can you believe it? Women in the state of Massachusetts are suing Walmart for failing to carry the "morning after" contraception pill in their pharmacies. In other words, these women are suing Wal-Mart because Walmart has refused to carry contraception for stupid people - i.e. something to take in the morning when they realize "oh darn, I did it, and didn't use contraception. I do not understand how anyone around my age (the oft-grouped 18-24-year-olds), especially those who attend a place of higher learning, can support the Republican party. Does not the nature of youth itself contradict the basic tenants of the GOP? Have you noticed that there is a new trend to wear house clothing outdoors? By "house clothing" I mean bathrobes, fuzzy slippers, and jammies. What the heck is up with that? Here is a perfect example. What the hell is this broad doing??
