Who Writes This Crap? Art & Wine Festivals of Bad Writing

I have no real love for marketers and marketing copywriters generally, but honestly, have you ever read the drivel that gets affixed to wine or attached to artwork? Who writes this crap?? Did they get their writing degree, if they have one, by drawing 'Spunky' from a matchbook? Do they actually take themselves seriously?? Does anyone take them seriously? Can you imagine being their kid, and having to go to school for "what does your parent do" day, and having to get up in front of a class and say "my daddy writes crap descriptions of wine"?? How well do anti-spam laws work? One of my recent experiences might shed some light on how such laws actually play out in front of judges. The short version: Laws can help, but they need to be pretty airtight, to take into account the fact that judges might be very hostile to people bringing these cases, probably for three reasons: (1) The law requires you to make a quasi-legal argument, and many judges, after trudging through years in law school and decades as a lawyer, resent people walking in off the street and making legal arguments; (2) Many judges don't use e-mail (more...)

White collar crime is in your back yard you just don’t know it yet

Have you ever gone into a convenience store, bought something for, say four dollars, hand the clerk a twenty and then proceeds to give you six dollars back? In singles? That happened to me, I started putting the money away all the time wondering...I ask "Didn't I give you a twenty?" "Oh, sorry ma'am" and looks into the cash drawer, astonished as if she cannot believe she made such a stupid mistake and hands me an additional ten dollar bill!!! I walk away muttering something like "You b****!" and the same time thinking "Clever, clevvvver!" Well that just happened again only (more...)
